The Market

Without much fanfare, citrus has been the leading fruit crop in terms of dollar value for most of the past 20 years. The value of the 2003-04 U.S. citrus crop was up 4 percent from the 2002 season to $2.35 billion.

Oranges grown in California account for more than 80 percent of the world’s citrus supplies. Grapefruit is about 50 percent of U.S. fresh citrus exports. It is one reason why grapefruit represents almost one-third of U.S. citrus production.
